Post

for an experienced researcher
at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Leipzig

from January 2008 for a period between 25 and 31 months
(i.e. end of contract between Feb. 2010 and August 2010):

"Possibilities and constraints for participation
in water and biodiversity governance"

This research for an experienced researcher focuses on the analysis of participation in water and biodiversity governance starting from a legal and/or institutional analysis. Cases of multi-level governance of natural resources analysed by several researchers in this network constitute the object of research. In specific fields, the researcher will investigate different settings of participatory processes. Issues of research can concentrate, e.g., on the contingency of best practices on specific regulatory systems, on more general links between organisational and legal structures, or on a comparison between water and biodiversity or between old and new member states. While developing a research project that addresses the applicant's core interests, the researcher will also benefit from the wider activities of the GoverNat Marie Curie network. Applicants with a background in legal and sociological or political sciences are encouraged to apply, but emphasis will be placed on demonstrating a willingness to engage with the subject of research from different disciplinary perspectives.

The post holder will be required to:

  • undertake post-doctoral research on possibilities and constraints for participation in water and biodiversity governance including background literature review, development of appropriate methodology, case-studies (involving internships and interaction with praxis partner), identification of implications of the research for future governance strategies
  • to publish their research in peer-reviewed international journals, including joint- authored papers (at least one paper per year)

Basic knowledge in German is an advantage and the willingness to improve knowledge in German is required.

The UFZ co-ordinates this project, and an additional early-stage researcher will be employed in this context. The UFZ team working in this project is constituted by legal and political scientists, economists, and ecologists. The post also benefits from a mentoring programme within the GoverNat network, which will support the career development of the candidate.

Deadline for applications is 18th November 2007, or until position is filled.
