Summary

Raphael is a Social Geographer / Sustainable Resource Manager with three years professional experience in academia, governmental and business consulting as well as re-insurance industries in Germany, New Zealand and Australia. The majority of his experience has been gained through conducting social science studies including quantitative household surveys and qualitative interviews with coastal communities as well as with the implementation of Sustainability Indicators and the introduction of Geographic Information Systems for governmental organizations.

Raphael studied Human and Physical Geography at Munich University in Germany. His focus was foremost on spatial planning, GIS, and sustainability research. In 2004 he graduated with a thesis on “Ecological Footprint” analysis of the city of Munich. In 2005 he was awarded the GregorLouisoder fellowship award in science for his research.

To deepen his competencies in environmental management practices he completed a M.Sc. degree in Sustainable Resource Management at the School of Forest Science and Resource Management in 2006. For his dissertation on “Stakeholder empowerment in ecological risk assessment processes – a case study of the Marine Protected Areas of Victoria – Australia”, he worked at the Institute of Land and Food Resources at the University of Melbourne as a researcher in an Australian Research Council funded project.

In 2007 Raphael joined the Centre for Sustainable Water Management at Lancaster University as an early stage researcher. In his doctoral research he is focussing on "The legitimacy of public participation in multi-level water governance". Raphael is jointly supervised by Prof. Louise Heathwaite, Dr. Nigel Watson, and Dr. Will Medd.
